Cameroon Yesterday, Cameroon Today, Cameroon Tomorrow.

Cameroon’s electoral system is fundamentally flawed, resulting in predictable outcomes that undermine the principles of democracy. The persistence of the same leadership for decades, underpinned by these flawed processes, calls into question the integrity of the country’s democratic framework. The control exercised by the ruling party over the electoral commission, ELECAM, and the subsequent influence on election outcomes, highlights a critical deficiency. This lack of genuine independence erodes public trust and perpetuates a cycle where the ruling party's dominance remains unchallenged.
The financial resources expended on these elections represent a significant waste, particularly given Cameroon’s pressing developmental needs. The state’s allocation of substantial funds to organize elections, whose outcomes are well known in advance, is a misallocation of resources that could otherwise be directed towards vital sectors. Healthcare, education, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation are areas that require urgent attention and investment. The continued financial commitment to flawed electoral processes diverts resources and focus away from these critical areas, exacerbating the country’s socioeconomic challenges.
Beyond the financial implications, the ethical dimensions of participating in such flawed elections further exacerbate public disillusionment and apathy. The predictability of election outcomes fosters a sense of futility among citizens, undermining their faith in the democratic process. This disillusionment is compounded by the perception that participating in elections legitimizes an undemocratic system. Consequently, voter turnout declines and political engagement diminishes, weakening the overall democratic fabric of the nation.
To address these pervasive issues, comprehensive reforms are urgently needed. A key reform is the establishment of an independent electoral commission. Reforming ELECAM to ensure its complete independence from executive influence is crucial. This can be achieved through transparent processes for appointing commissioners and conducting elections, possibly with international oversight or assistance. An independent commission would enhance the credibility of elections and rebuild public trust in the electoral process.
Additionally, ensuring media freedom and fair campaign practices is essential. The media must operate without government control or censorship, providing unbiased information to the electorate. Equal access to public media and campaign resources for all political parties is necessary to create a level playing field. Updating voter rolls to ensure that all eligible citizens can vote and introducing robust mechanisms to monitor and verify vote counting and result tabulation will further enhance transparency and credibility.
Protecting the rights of opposition parties and enhancing political pluralism are also vital reforms. Legal protections must be established to allow opposition parties and candidates to campaign freely without intimidation. Encouraging political pluralism through reforms that promote the participation of diverse political actors will strengthen democracy and provide a more representative government.
Cameroonians, should reflect on the persistent flaws in the electoral system, the misallocation of valuable resources, and the enduring hardships faced daily, it is imperative that you ask yourselves: Are we content to perpetuate a system that fails to represent our true will, or are we ready to demand the comprehensive reforms necessary to build a genuine democracy? The power to shape our nation's future lies in our hands. As political science teaches us, true democratic change requires the active participation and engagement of an informed citizenry. It is only through collective action, strategic advocacy, and an unwavering demand for accountability and transparency that we can transform our political landscape and create a Cameroon that truly serves its people. Cameroonians should seize this moment to think critically and act decisively for the future of a true nation.
